BJJ Instructor

Name: Rob Westney
Weight:
87kg – Middle Heavy
Height:
6’ 2’’
Purple Belt

Rob started martial arts at the age of 16, training mainly in muay thai and self defence. During university, whilst studying for a degree in Physiotherapy, Rob also began training in traditional Japanese ju-jitsu, where he also achieved the rank of purple belt. It was during the ground-fighting aspect of the Japanese art that he discovered his love for grappling and decided to begin BJJ in 2005.

Rob started BJJ under Brazilian Black Belt Eduardo Carriello in London Bridge, and fought his first competition as a white belt at the 2005 London Open, where he won a silver medal. In 2006, he decided to enter his first No-gi competition and managed to win bronze in a tough category at the British Submission Wrestling Championships. Since then, Rob has been a frequent competitor and supporter at many tournaments across the UK, winning several medals along the way including; Gold at weight and Silver at absolute at the Welsh Open 2008, Bronze at the British Gi Open 2009, and Silver at the 3rd Brighton Open 2009 and British No-Gi 2009.

Rob has always found teaching BJJ and helping others to progress very enjoyable, which is partly due to his work as a Physiotherapist. In late 2009, Rob started training under Nick Brooks at Mill Hill BJJ, and although he is yet to compete in 2010 due to injuries, he hopes to drive himself and others at the club to do well in forthcoming events.
